Check out Prof. Paul Krugman's article "For Ritcher" on the rise of Income Inequality in America. Its a New York Times link and it will require you to register but it is well worth it. Click Here.
Prof Kungman in his article "For Ritcher" (see above) quotes a study by Thomas Piketty, at the French research institute Cepremap, and Emmanuel Saez, who is now at the University of California at Berkeley. Using income tax data, Piketty and Saez have produced estimates of the incomes of the well-to-do, the rich and the very rich back to 1913. This study entitled "Income Inequality in the United States, 1913-1998" is a 113 page PDF document. Click Here.
